I've never seen a Hyundai tiburon go so fast...? I'm not sure if i'm excited or pissed, mostly confused

That looks like a cleaned up version of a Rally Fighter. Meaning the Rally Fighter was the concept vehicle, and this is what was actually produced. Also, I hate when car companies get us excited for a new concept and then release the same vehicle as last year with a new grill. Don't raise our expectations for the same garbage!

I need to see more of that green EG6 Civic rally!
What the world needs now, is moar FWD rally cars.

Yeah, that's been around a while. It bears little to a production Hyundai Tiburon. 4WD, turbo, etc.

Built by the great John Buffum himself, and campaigned by his son-in-law Paul Choiniere for many years.

I spy Matt Johnston @ 9:47! Grabbing more footage for Easier Said Than Done, no doubt!

I'd wager nearly half the field at any given US rally is FWD

Mitsubishi Evo drivetrain (and engine IIRC)

Yup - you are quite correct. He was on the same corner shooting with his Phantom super-duper slo-mo cam.

Officially it's now running Hyundai power (though I never looked under the hood). The drivetrain is a mix-mosh of Mitsu and Subaru parts. The car was originally a Hyundai factory Tiburon rally car driven by Paul Choiniere in several North American events as well as first X Games RallyCar race. It was re-skinned for X Games with the 2003 Tiburon shell, iirc, though the car is much older. Maybe a 1998? Here are the car's official specs from Libra Racing (the builder and maintainer of the car) http://www.libraracing.com/tiburon6.htm

L'Estage was racing the Hyundai because he crashed his Mitsubishi Lancer WRC05 at Oregon Trail and he already committed his Evo X to Rifat Sungkar for the remainder of the season.

Did the GT86 run RWD or was it converted to AWD?

Is anyone competing with a Rally Fighter?

It's in Group 5, which is the high powered 2WD class (in this case, RWD.) It competes against a very fast clutch of FWD Fiestas.

Unfortunately, we won't be at Ojibwe (Round 6), but we do plan to make LSPR! (Round 7, Final Event for 2013)

Here's L'Estage with his wheel Rifat was talking about. He lost it at my marshal post on SS 11 Sturtevent pond. You could tell he was defeated by his continuous bad luck from this season. Nathalie on the other hand made the best of the situation and came and hung out with a few of us and cheered cars on as they passed. Such a great time. I wish I was back up there.

And here's the collection of cars from our intersection. Honda racing's civic si cracked an oil pan on SS 8. Those guys were fun. We traded water and trail mix for some red bulls they had in the car.

Correct. One of two Tibs built by Buffum/Libra Racing as a Hyundai factory backed program. The other was run by L'Estage himself (Amtoine says he finished that car off). Seamus Burke also had a go in one of them for a bit, though I don't know which chassis that was. This Tib also ran the 2011 Mt Washington hillclimb, finishing top 5 overall.

That icar belongs to Nameless Performance. They are 20 minutes north of Portland Oregon. They make beautiful exhausts and sundries. I know Jason and the rest of they guys who work there are are top notch.

Shucks. That'd be cool to see. I've yet to even see one in person. You'd think being in SE Michigan I would have seen at least one. Especially with the Dream Cruise.
